What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content and managing a brand's online presence so that AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude — cite or recommend it when generating an answer to a user's question.
The term was formally introduced in a November 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," by researchers from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi. The paper showed that specific content features — like authoritative language, statistics, and citations — measurably change whether AI systems select a source.
Think of the shift this way: traditional SEO earns a click. GEO earns a mention inside the answer itself — sometimes without a click at all.
